Skies are blue, paddling pools are out, temperatures on dashboards are recording 30+°….Mams and Dads across Gowran have today off work!!! No need for buckets and spades though – only hurls and helmets as the Young Ireland U8 team boarded their team bus heading for Croker!
In a week that sees the release of the BFG, our very own BFG – Boys From Gowran starred in the greatest stadium of all …Croke Park.
It’s every child’s dream to run onto the hallowed turf and today that became a reality for the BFG!!!
Conditions were hot…Heat rained down on them like the breath of hell. Their helmets cocooned their heads in warm sweat, the arid heat burnt at their legs. Even the birds were silent and the grass stood still as if too hot to move. But boy did our giants move!!!
The opposition were two Laois teams; Ballinakill and Borris-in-Ossory/Kilcotton. The BFG gave a tremendous display of hurling, blocking and teamwork, a team Brian Cody would have been proud of!
Each child mounted the steps of the Hogan Stand to lift the cup. Not men….but giants.
The team then headed for Supermacs to replenish and rehydrate!! Many thanks to their mentor Niall for coordinating the day and organising all the boys!! Also thanks to his selectors; Ciaran, Thomas and Ger. One whizzpopper of a day!!
